Tried it on STS and then on commandline using only grails.

I have this problem too, though I reproduced it slightly differently (I had an app running on tomcat/hibernate first and then switch to app-engine). I tried installing the logging plugin (which provides org.codehaus.groovy.grails.plugins.logging.Log4jConfig), but to no avail.

I looked around and it seems appengine plugin for Grails is dead in the water. Few developers suggested gaelyk and unfortunately that seems to be failing for Log4J reason too.
        Fuck this Log4j crap
